All the best!
Billy
First of all i'm very sorry because of my english - which is not very good and at this time i'm also a bit embarrassed.
I've found out the greatest talent and charisma of Mr. Presley not long ago and was totaly shaked by this gratest person!
Of course after downloading and hearing music and watching conserts i decided to find out some information and facts about Mr.Presley's life.
And i was totaly surprised - on one of the popular sites dedicated to Mr.Presley i found an information that he had a double from 1969 till 1977, who was not just physicaly so alike Elvis, but even his voice was idetical. And that man, as it was said on that site - his name was Larry Blong, was not just singing for Elvis, but gave conserts pretending to be Mr. Presley, because of Mr.Presley's bad health.
To tell the truth, i didn't believe this and tried to find out more informaton about Larry Blong, but of course i understand that threre are lot's of poseurs on Internet - i even found a site where someone called Sandy (or smth like that) was posting Elvis images and saing that it really is Larry Blong. And there was also an image of Elvis with (as it was said there) Larry Blong near gates of Graceland. After all this i didn't know what to believe in, cause on that site was also a statement that it even wasn't Elvis, who really gave concerts on Hawaii....
I didn't believe in all this mess and i continued to find information about Larry Blong - so i found this site. And now i became more calm, because i found here the story of your memories about meeting Mr.Presley. It is very interesting and I want to say - I do respect you as a human being very much - i never believed that real Elvis fan and even if he really look-like-Elvis would spread such fake stories like it was on that site.
Thank you for your true stories! And that's a shame that there are sites like i found at first - because i'm sure lot's of Elvis fans, who - like me - don't know much about everything - for whom this all is new - believe in this fakes.
Sorry for my long and puzzle-pated comment, but it's just because i've got such a mixture of feelings - i've found a "real" Larry Blong - who not just look like Elvis and have met him personal, but never pretended to be him and work for him. That's just incredible and i'm so happy that all this stories are crap (sorry for this-))
Thank you very much for reading it
Truly yours
Olga
P.S. It would be really great to hear the rest of your memories about Mr. Presley.
Johnny Foster,
Is that your real name because that pic of Elvis in CA is superimposed. That guy is not even looking at Elvis! What a scam! You were never even near THE KING. I shook hands with Elvis seven times and even kissed Elvis' right hand on the very first handshake behind the Hilton Hotel in Philly in June of 1974. I lived in Memphis and performed at the very first Elvis Convention at the Cook Convention Center in Memphis in June of 1976. Elvis buddy George Klein was there and was impressed enough that he called Dick Clark from his WHBQ studios the next day. GK told me, "Larry, Elvis wouldn't want to see you perform, it would be too scary". He also said, "As a rule I don't dig Elvis imitators, but I can see how much you love Elvis". Bill Burke of the Memphis Press-Scimitar wrote in an article entitiled, "Double EL, A Near Duplicate" quoted George Klein as saying, "It was unreal, I went out into the audience, his finger movements, lips, eyes, shoulders, the way he walks, he must study Elvis' moves 12 hours a day". I hate to talk about myself but when someone like you comes along and tries to distort the truth and claim a little glory for themselves then I have to set the record straight. I am glad that pic is not me because it looks absolutely nothing like Elvis! I have pics of me that fooled Elvis' own family. It is blasphemous to go on to an Elvis site and lie and mislead Elvis fans. Elvis' secretary, Becky Yancey, wrote a book called "My Life With Elvis". On page 54 she lists "Double EL" Larry Blong, from Philadelphia PA and Memphis as one of the top Elvis acts in the USA. Elvis went off on stage one time to set the record straight and I guess that is what I have tried to do here today. johnny (fake name I'm sure) go find another hobby! I will post some Elvis stories both real and fiction for you true Elvis fans soon. Larry Blong
First Visit to Memphis"
The University of Houston and its sprawling campus lies between
Calhoun Rd. and Cullen Blvd. in the southwestern part of the city of
Houston. Waiting for me as I left Houston's Continental Airport (Inter-
continental today) was a business curriculum, a few Mexican senoritas,
and 95 degree heat with sweltering humidity. The time was August
1970 and it felt good to be in "The Lone Star" state. Although I still
felt that Texas was partially responsible for what happened to JFK.
The enrollment was over 30,000. The campus had a state-of-the-
art University Center and two new skyscraper dorms called the Moody
Towers. I lived in the quadrangle as did my brother who came down
the following year. Steve was set to accept a basketball scholarship
to Indiana University when a coaching job change derailed everything.
They brought in some guy named Bobby Knight! The quad had a
homier atmosphere and was closer to the only bar near campus.
This was a factor as we had no wheels.
I picked up a little spare change ($5.50 a game) by working on
the groundcrew for the Houston Astros. I had worked for the Phillies
and an exec who had come to work for the Phils from Houston gave
me a letter to give to a boss at the Dome and voila, I was hired.
Traveling out to Kirby Drive and donning my red spacesuit and white
helmet probably wasn't worth the money, but seeing Mays, Aaron
and Clemente up close was.
Our two and one year stay at the U. of H. came to an end when
Steve and I accepted a B-Ball scholarship to Wilmington College in
September of 1972. We kind of missed our buddies back in
Houston and in August of '73 a trip was planned to drive an old car
that Steve had back to the U. of H. This car had no air but we didn't
think that was any big deal. However 100 plus degree temps were
waiting for us in east Texas and it was brutal. We stopped at some-
one's house for the first time before we even got to Arkansas or east
Texas. The house was located in Whitehaven, or in the southern
part of Memphis. It's called Graceland, and belonged to the King of
Rock 'n Roll, Elvis Presley.
Old Bessie made it through the Smoky Mountains and before
we knew it we were leaving Nashville on our way to Memphis, about
200 miles away. The anticipation of seeing Elvis' home for the first
time was exhilirating. Would he be home I thought. No way.
Probably in Vegas or on the road. As we entered Shelby County
we were hit by a hailstorm the likes we never see back home. We
pulled over and waited for the frozen golf balls to subside. Finally
when the barrage halted we got out and asked a service station
attendant (grease monkey) how to get to Graceland. "Easy, he
said, go down three blocks, turn left and go down 'til you see a
small forest appear. You can't miss it".
A bunch of stores, restaurants and hotels, one even called
Elvis Presley Blvd. Inn lined Highway 51. In 1971 this street was
renamed Elvis Presley Blvd. We traveled a few blocks then all at
once a miniature forest appeared. There it was, like something
out of Grimm's fairytales. The green Music Gates, with the sil-
houettes of Elvis and the music notes. This is the kind of thing,
I thought, that is usually done for a fictional character, not a real
human being. But then, this is Elvis, not your ordinary human.
The large antebellum mansion sat at the top of the hill a couple
hundred feet from the street. The landscape ascended at about
a 45 degree angle from the gates to the house. Freshly painted
white curbs lined the driveway to the house. Two marble lion
heads and flowers were symmetrically placed on either side of
the front door. We stood outside the closed Music Gates with
mouths agape. Out from the guardhouse came a man in his
sixties, with every blond hair in place. Wearing a security shirt
and black pants he said in a drawl, "How ya'll doin'"?
Vester Presley, is Elvis' uncle, and works as a guard for
Elvis at Graceland. Vester's brother is Vernon Presley who
happens to be Elvis' Dad. Vester and Vernon married sisters
and so Vester's daughter Patsy is a double first cousin to Elvis.
Simple right? After some informal hellos Steve said, "Aren't
you Uncle Vester? Vester replied, "Sure am". I said,
"There's no way that Elvis is home". Vester said, "He sure is.
Came in last night from Las Vegas with bronchitis. The public
doesn't know yet but when they do they'll start comin' down to
the gate". I said, "You mean Elvis is right up there in that
house! Vester invited us in out of the rain. He hit a black
button and the gates swung open. We were officially on Elvis'
turf. Inside the guardhouse we rattled off one question after
another about Elvis. I asked Vester what happened between
Elvis and Priscilla. Vester answered it the best he could with
a theory. He said, "When a man isn't around a woman be-
comes sensitive to another man's touch". Even though I was
only 21 I had sense enough to leave that alone. It was around
4:30 pm and Vester said he had to take the jeep up to deliver
the papers for the house and two trailers behind the house.
Elvis aunt, Miss Pritchett, who was a minister, lived in one and
Elvis' cousin, Billy Smith and his wife lived in the other.
I asked Vester if he could take up an 8 track I had and
ask Elvis to sign it if he was up. Vester said he would ask
Elvis if he saw him. He came back down the drive twenty
minutes later but said Elvis wasn't up. I asked Vester if he
would sign it and he said he wasn't too good at that stuff but
that he would try. We shook hands with Vester and told him
we were heading for Houston to see some friends. We told
Vester that while we were at the U. of H. we saw Elvis perform
twice. In November of '71 at Hofheinz Pavilion on the campus,
and in April of '72 in San Antonio, where they filmed part of
"Elvis on Tour". Just two months later, again, in New York's
Madison Square Garden.
Seeing Elvis was becoming a habit, almost an addiction.
We crossed the Memphis-Arkansas bridge with fond mem-
ories of our first visit to Graceland. We saw Elvis perform
several more times over the next two years, but had no idea
that by 1976 we would be living just two blocks away from
the "King" himself!
